Northern Europe & Fjords Cruises

Two great summer voyages in one region: the sheer-walled Norwegian Fjords and a garland of Baltic capitals, sailed under near-endless northern daylight.

Northern Europe is a summer specialist, and it delivers two very different trips. The Norwegian Fjords route threads mirror-still waterways beneath waterfalls and snow-capped peaks — Geiranger, Nærøyfjord, Flåm — with the ship itself gliding through scenery that is the main event. The Baltic route is a capitals tour by sea: Copenhagen, Stockholm's archipelago, Helsinki, Tallinn's medieval old town, Gdańsk and Germany's Warnemünde for Berlin.

Both sail the long days of a Scandinavian summer, when the sun barely sets and evenings stay bright for exploring. Fjord sailings often run round-trip from Southampton, Copenhagen or Bergen on 7 nights; Baltic loops typically leave from Copenhagen, Stockholm or Southampton on 7–14 nights. Scenic cruising — hours of standing at the rail as the fjord narrows — is a real part of the itinerary, so an open promenade and good viewing decks matter.

The region draws a wide field: MSC, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean at the mass-market end; Princess, Holland America and Celebrity in premium (all strong scenic-cruising operators); and a deep luxury bench — Viking, Regent, Silversea, Seabourn, Oceania — plus expedition lines like HX and Hurtigruten that push north to Svalbard and the Arctic. Viking, Scandinavian to its core, is especially at home here.

When to cruise Northern Europe & Fjords

This is a May–September region and no other. June and July bring the longest daylight and warmest, driest weather (and the biggest crowds); May and September are quieter and cooler. Outside summer, ships leave and daylight collapses.

MonthAvg °FSeasonWhat it's like
January33–38°FOff-PeakDark, cold and wet — mainstream fjord cruising is dormant (a few aurora voyages aside).
February32–39°FOff-PeakSnowbound peaks and short days; the classic season hasn't begun.
March34–43°FOff-PeakStill wintry and dim, with fjord sailings not yet running.
April38–49°FOff-PeakCool and quiet as ships prepare to reposition north.
May44–58°FShoulderSeason opens with roaring snowmelt waterfalls and long, mild days.
June50–62°FPeakLush green cliffs and near-midnight sun make this a fjord highlight.
July54–66°FPeakWarmest, brightest month with full ships and endless daylight.
August54–64°FPeakLong light and green fjords continue at the summer peak.
September49–58°FShoulderCrisp, golden and quieter — a lovely value month before the close.
October43–51°FOff-PeakDays shorten and the season winds down as weather turns.
November38–44°FOff-PeakCold, dark and wet; scheduled fjord cruising has ended.
December34–40°FOff-PeakDeep-winter dormancy apart from occasional northern-lights sailings.
Good to know: Weather in the fjords is changeable even in July — layers and a waterproof shell turn a grey hour into a non-issue, and the scenery is often at its most dramatic in the mist.
