Premium Classic mid-size premium cruising with the best live music at sea

A 150-year-old line of Dutch heritage that occupies the refined, traditional end of the premium market with elegant mid-size ships rather than mega-ships. It leans on live music, culinary partnerships and destination depth, and is a leader in Alaska, the Panama Canal and long-duration Grand Voyages and world cruises.

Who Holland America Line is for

Experienced, destination-focused cruisers who skew older (typically 50-plus) and value a calm, gracious, less-crowded ship over waterslides and nonstop activity. Music lovers, foodies and travellers drawn to longer, port-intensive itineraries. Not aimed at families with young children or party seekers.

The fleet

A fleet of roughly 11 mid-size ships across four classes, carrying about 1,400 to 2,700 guests each. The newest and largest are the three Pinnacle-class ships (~99,500 gross tons); below them sit the Signature class (Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam), the Vista class (Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam, Noordam) and the smaller, more port-flexible R-class (Volendam, Zaandam). The flagship Rotterdam, delivered in 2021, is the newest ship.

The onboard experience

Dining

Specialty venues include Pinnacle Grill (steakhouse), Tamarind (pan-Asian), Canaletto (Italian) and the reservation-only Rudi's Sel de Mer, alongside the Dining Room, the Lido Market casual buffet, Grand Dutch Cafe and Dive-In poolside. The line is known for its Culinary Arts Center demonstrations and a longstanding reputation for above-average main-dining-room fare.

Entertainment & activities

The calling card is Music Walk, a cluster of adjacent live-music venues — B.B. King's Blues Club, the Rolling Stone Rock Room, Billboard Onboard dueling pianos and the classical Lincoln Center Stage — that guests dip in and out of. The two-deck World Stage hosts production shows on a wraparound LED screen; the entertainment lineup has been evolving in recent seasons.

Families & kids

Club HAL offers supervised programming for kids and tweens, but the onboard demographic skews older and families are a small minority; there are no waterparks or elaborate youth facilities.

What's included

Fares are largely a la carte, but the optional 'Have It All' package (around $60 per person per day) bundles the Signature Beverage Package, a Wi-Fi surf plan, specialty-dining nights and a shore-excursion credit, moving the experience closer to all-inclusive.
