The Aegean and Adriatic are the Mediterranean at its most storybook: Santorini's cliff-top villages glowing at sunset, Mykonos's windmills and nightlife, the ruins of Athens and Ephesus, and — up the Adriatic — Dubrovnik's marble walls, Split's Roman palace and the islands of Croatia and Montenegro. Distances between islands are short, so this is dense, port-rich cruising with a swim-stop feel.

Itineraries usually sail round-trip from Athens (Piraeus) or Venice/Trieste and Dubrovnik, mixing the Cyclades (Santorini, Mykonos, Paros), the Dodecanese (Rhodes, Kos), Crete and often a Turkish call at Kuşadası for Ephesus. Adriatic-focused routes lean into Croatia's coast. Because Santorini and Mykonos are small and wildly popular, the size of your ship and the timing of your call shape the day enormously.

Smaller ships have a real advantage here. Luxury and yacht lines — Azamara, Seabourn, Windstar, the Ritz-Carlton Collection — often overnight in Santorini or Mykonos so you're ashore for the sunset after the day boats leave, and they berth in tiny harbours the big ships must skip or tender. Mass-market and premium lines still sail the region well; you just share the marquee islands with more people.

When to cruise Greek Isles & Adriatic

Late May to mid-June and September into early October are ideal — hot-enough seas, softer crowds and prices than the July–August peak, when the islands and the meltemi wind are at full blast. Many ships reposition away by November.

MonthAvg °FSeasonWhat it's like
January42–53°FOff-PeakCool, damp and off-season along the Dalmatian coast; ships stay away.
February42–54°FOff-PeakMild but quiet winter with minimal Adriatic sailings.
March46–58°FOff-PeakCool early spring as the coast slowly reawakens.
April52–63°FShoulderPleasant, greening spring days open the season with light crowds.
May59–70°FShoulderWarm, sunny and uncrowded — a lovely month for walled old towns.
June66–78°FShoulderWarm Adriatic swims and long days ahead of the summer peak.
July69–83°FPeakHot and crowded; Dubrovnik and Split bustle at peak season.
August69–82°FPeakPeak summer heat and packed ramparts — gorgeous but busy.
September64–77°FShoulderWarm seas and easing crowds make for ideal late-season cruising.
October57–69°FShoulderMild, golden autumn with excellent value before the close.
November50–61°FOff-PeakCooling and quieting as the Adriatic season winds down.
December45–55°FOff-PeakCool, wet and dormant; essentially no coastal cruise service.
Good to know: Santorini tenders into a cramped port with a cable car up the cliff; on a busy day the queue can eat an hour each way — an overnight or an early-tender ship is worth seeking out.
