Alaska is a nature cruise first and a port cruise second. The draw is the scenery itself — ships nose up to calving tidewater glaciers in Glacier Bay, Hubbard or Endicott Arm, while humpbacks, orcas, sea otters, bald eagles and bears fill the days in between. The ports (Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Sitka) are small former gold-rush and fishing towns that serve as launch points for the real show: floatplanes, dog-sledding on glaciers, whale-watching boats and salmon bakes.

There are two route types. The Inside Passage round-trip (usually from Seattle or Vancouver) stays in sheltered water and returns to the same port — simplest to book. The one-way Gulf of Alaska cruise (Vancouver to Whittier/Seward for Anchorage, or reverse) opens up College Fjord and, crucially, pairs with a land 'cruisetour' to Denali and the interior — the way to actually go inland. Vancouver is the classic homeport; Seattle round-trips are convenient but spend more time at sea. The Pacific Coastal repositioning runs (California wine-country ports, the Pacific Northwest) bookend the season in spring and autumn.

Alaska is a premium heartland: Princess and Holland America dominate, with decades of local lodges, rail cars and cruisetour infrastructure; Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Celebrity field big modern ships; and Viking, Regent, Seabourn, Silversea and Oceania run quieter luxury voyages, with expedition and small ships (UnCruise-style, Windstar) getting deeper into the wilderness.

When to cruise Alaska & Pacific

The season runs early May to late September only. July and August are warmest and best for wildlife and the interior but busiest; May–June are drier with lower fares; September brings early northern lights and fewer crowds but cooler, wetter days.

MonthAvg °FSeasonWhat it's like
January23–32°FOff-PeakDeep winter — the Inside Passage is dark and frozen; no ships sail.
February25–36°FOff-PeakCold and snowbound; Alaska cruising is entirely dormant.
March28–40°FOff-PeakStill wintry with short days; the season is weeks from opening.
April43–58°FShoulderSpring repositioning starts as ships move between Mexico and Alaska.
May40–55°FShoulderSeason opens: driest month, snowy peaks and value fares before crowds.
June47–61°FPeakLong days and lush greenery — peak wildlife and glacier viewing begins.
July50–64°FPeakWarmest, busiest month with midnight-sun light and full ships.
August49–63°FPeakPeak salmon runs, bears and whales; wetter but prime demand.
September52–66°FPeakWarm days and wine-harvest calls make this the coastal high point.
October46–57°FShoulderFall repositioning south with crisp, clear early-autumn weather.
November31–38°FOff-PeakWinter shutdown — no scheduled Alaska sailings.
December27–34°FOff-PeakFrozen and dark; the region is closed to cruising.
Good to know: For a first Alaska trip, the one-way Gulf sailing plus a Denali cruisetour sees far more of the state than an Inside Passage round-trip — worth the extra open-jaw flights.
