The Canada/New England cruise is the northeast's answer to Alaska: a scenic-and-history coastal voyage that peaks in a very specific season. Ships sail between Boston or New York and Quebec City (or Montreal), calling at Bar Harbor for Acadia National Park, Portland (Maine), Halifax and the Nova Scotia coast, Saint John for the Bay of Fundy's giant tides, and Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island. Up the St. Lawrence, the finale is the walled, French-flavoured old town of Quebec City.
It's a comfortable, mostly one- or two-country trip with easy, walkable ports and a strong food-and-heritage streak — lobster shacks, lighthouses, maritime museums, Anne of Green Gables and the Titanic graves of Halifax. Sailings run 7–14 nights, often one-way between Boston/New York and Quebec so you can bookend with city time at either end.
Premium lines are the backbone — Princess, Holland America and Celebrity — with Royal Caribbean and Norwegian fielding larger ships and luxury lines (Oceania, Regent, Silversea, Seabourn, Viking) running quieter, longer versions. Small size is an asset for the St. Lawrence and the compact ports.
The blockbuster season is mid-September to mid-October, timed to New England and Canadian fall foliage — book early, as leaf-peeping sailings sell out. Summer (June–August) is warmer and greener but without the colour; the shoulders are milder and quieter.
