Expedition The original 130-year Norwegian Coastal Express, port to port

Hurtigruten runs the Norwegian Coastal Express, a working coastal voyage in continuous operation since 1893 that is part scheduled ferry, part cruise. Ships sail the length of Norway between Bergen and Kirkenes, calling at 34 ports and carrying locals, cargo and travellers alike. It is deliberately not a luxury cruise but an authentic, scenery- and community-driven journey.

Who Hurtigruten is for

Independent travellers who want an authentic immersion in coastal Norway, dramatic fjord and Arctic scenery and the Northern Lights, and who value ports and landscape over resort-style amenities. It is not for those seeking all-inclusive luxury, casinos, production shows or a party atmosphere.

The fleet

A fleet of coastal ships works the Bergen-Kirkenes route (the ship depends on the departure date), in a casual, distinctly Norwegian style using locally sourced materials. Vessels include the refurbished flagship MS Trollfjord along with MS Kong Harald, MS Richard With, MS Nordkapp, MS Nordlys, MS Midnatsol and MS Nordnorge. Sizes are modest (typically a few hundred guests), letting them reach small ports large ships cannot.

The onboard experience

Dining

Norway's Coastal Kitchen is the culinary signature: locally inspired, seasonal dishes made from regional Norwegian ingredients picked up at ports along the way, served in the main restaurant (Torget) on Coastal Express sailings, with additional venues and more inclusive dining on Signature voyages.

Entertainment & activities

There is no big-ship entertainment; instead the draw is the scenery, the port calls and the onboard Coastal/Expedition Experience Team offering lectures, workshops (such as landscape painting and photography) and Northern Lights viewing.

Families & kids

Family-friendly and open to all ages given its ferry heritage, but there are no dedicated kids' clubs or children's programming.

What's included

Two voyage styles: the classic Coastal Express includes breakfast, lunch and dinner in the main restaurant (with drinks and excursions extra, port-to-port), while Signature Voyages are largely all-inclusive, adding inclusive drinks, longer port stays, more relaxation amenities and a larger expedition team for guiding. Aurora-season sailings carry a Northern Lights Promise (a free repeat voyage if the lights aren't sighted on qualifying trips).
